Notes:

  1. Population Census of Nepal 2001 has registered 000 ethnic groups. The population of only 15 major ethnic groups and castes has been taken for the purpose of this information.
  2. In Census 1981, population of ethnic groups/castes was enumerated on the basis of their mother tongue. This made minority ethnic groups population incredibly lower than the actual.
  3. In 1991 census, population was enumerated on the basis of caste and ethnicity. This resulted in the overwhelming rise in the population of minority ethnic groups.
  4. In 2001 census, the growth of population of minority ethnic groups except Muslim and Bhote+Sherpa maintained proximity with national population growth rate.
  5. Chhetri, Bramhan-Hill, Kami, Damai, Thakuri and Sarki belong to the same Khasa ethnicity. Their population has been enumerated as castes in 1991 and 2001 censuses.
  6. Fall in the population growth of Kamis, Damais, Thakuris and Sarkis may be attributed to their tendency to use the surnames as those of Chhetris and Bramhans-Hill.
  7. With the rise in the consciousness about ethnicity, population of minority ethnic groups is expected to continue to rise above national average also in 2011 census.
